Glen Ellen's fig cafe and wine bar is the place to go on nights when you need a break from Sonoma County's trophy restaurants but still want some great California cuisine. The menu is set seasonally, except for a few daily specials. The fig cafe offers lighter fare, like soups or salads, pizzas, a great burger (and yummy fries with tarragon aioli), fabulous mussels and then a selection of 5 or 6 entrees. The cassoulet is positively addictive (I made a sad attempt to recreate it at home), with duck confit, smoked sausage, beans and herbed bread crumbs served in a small casserole dish. Don't go to fig cafe without a few bottles of the wine from your cellar or ones you collected during the day: there's never a corkage fee. Killer desserts include pumpkin bread pudding and butterscotch pots de creme.
