Is it better to stake or cage tomatoes?

Staking takes up less space than caging. Simple to install. The vines & tomatoes are up off the ground, resulting in cleaner fruit and less rotting. it is easy to see the tomatoes and easy to harvest.

Which type of tomato staking is most important?

Wooden stakes should be at least 1 inch square. Metal stakes can be of smaller diameter and have the advantage of lasting many years. Do not use chemically treated wood. Sections of concrete reinforcing rods (rebar) make excellent tomato stakes.
